Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is collagen?
A: Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and accounts for some 85% of the skin, hair, nail and joint tissue. Collagen levels deplete at a rate of 1.5% every year after the age of 25. After this age most people start to notice the appearance of fine lines and loss of skin elasticity. Joint degradation may also start to become evident due to a decrease in collagen production. Like any other proteins, collagen consists of amino acids. Altogether there are 20 different kinds in human cells; collagen is rich in amino acids. Supplying these in abundance

Q: What are amino acids?
A: Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are utilized by every cell in the body for a variety of crucial functions. Normally we obtain amino acids from our food source, particularly those high in protein. The body breaks this protein down into their constituent parts and our cells use these to build the specific types of protein each of them needs amino acids, they are critical to our body's proper functioning. Their role includes repairing muscles, organs, nails, hair, skin, ligaments and glands. A deficiency in even one of them will severely compromise one's health. Deficient people, however, are not the only ones who choose to supplement with amino acids, some people opt to increase their intake simply for therapeutic benefits.

Q: What are free radicals?
A: Free radicals are formed when a weak bond in a molecule splits leaving an odd, unpaired electron. These electrons (free radicals) are highly unstable, and try to capture electrons from other compounds to gain stability. They 'attack' the nearest stable molecule. When this molecule is attacked, it becomes unstable causing a chain reaction of free radicals, finally resulting in the disruption of the living cell. Some free radicals can be handled by your body naturally, but many environmental factors cause an increase in free radicals that can cause damage. Free radical damage accumulates with age.
